Pomegranate Grape With A Twist™

Pomegranate Grape With a Twist™

This recipe is actually one of my all-time-favorites.  I use it a lot at my parties and people hover around the Hookah like fiends waiting for their turn to take a hit.  The flavor is very mellow and slightly sweet.  It leaves a nice finish and it goes awesome with a nice glass of red or white wine.

Ingredients:

1/2 Head Grape Tobacco

1/2 Head Pomegranate Tobacco

(Optional: A Pinch of Mint Tobacco)

1-2 Cups White or Red Wine

Ice

1-2 Lemons or Limes Cut into small pieces

Instructions:

Fill 1/2 of the Hookah Head with your favorite Grape Tobacco and 1/2 with your favorite Pomegranate tobacco.  You can add in a pinch of Mint tobacco–so nice.

Once your’e done packing the Hookah head fill the base with ice until it’s approximately 3/4 full and then pour in 1-2 cups of Red or White wine (use the cheap stuff, believe me you will not be drinking it once it’s in the base) into the Hookah base.

Finally, cut lemon or lime wedges and squeeze the fresh juice–I like!–into the hookah base and toss the wedges in after them.  This will give your Hookah a profoundly aromatic flavor.  Test it out at this point.  Take a hit without any coal and the flavor should be like a blast of spring time in your mouth.

Enjoy… this is the Art of Cloud™!

Tradition vs. Innovation

“Innovation is the ability to see change as an opportunity--not a threat”

It seems that there is always a tension between innovation (let’s call it progress) and tradition (let’s call it status quo).  This fact is no less true in the world of the Hookah, Shisha, Nargile, Gelyoun, and Hubbly Bubbly.  In discussing our forthcoming “Electric Hookah Head™” with some people in the Hookah community, I’ve heard feedback that for some, the coal itself is part of the process and tradition of using a Hookah.

While I can certainly understand this perspective, I must humbly disagree.  The reality is that in the 600 or so years since Hookahs were first invented to filter tobacco smoke, the process and tradition has undergone continual changes.  In the beginning, most Hookahs were made from clay and had a solid wooden pipe to smoke from.  The coal sat directly on the tobacco (there was obviously no aluminum foil 600 years ago) and the tobacco was unflavored.  These first Hookahs were not very ornamental and were produced with function in mind, rather than the totality of the experience.  As time went on, decorative metal replaced clay, and ornate glass replaced metal, and soon, even this will change.  From this perspective, it becomes clear that the tradition of Hookah, Shisha, Nargile, Gelyoun, and Hubbly Bubbly use is to innovate and be creative–just looking at the myriad of names for the same thing demonstrates this in a poignant and elegant way.

Flash forward to the present and you have Sparx–the first major leap forward since the first tobacco flavors were produced.  One of our core values is innovation and with that creativity.  We don’t believe that taking the coal away from the Hookah diminishes, in any way, the experience.  If anything it makes it more pure.

Smoking a Hookah heated by coals produces ash, and other compounds that find their way into the Hookah users lungs; a result I believe we can all agree is best to avoid.  In addition to the harmful health effects of coal, the ash and compounds from the coal add a “flavor” (and I use that term loosely) that can only be described as “coaly.”  It’s not good, but it’s tolerable in most circumstances, even though it definitely diminishes the experience.

On the other hand, the Electric Hookah Head™ has no ash, maintains a purer flavor, and is, in every way, a healthier smoke than what one would get from coal.  I have sampled both, and the future is Electric.  Just as factories are moving towards a “greener” alternative, so too must this ancient art… the Art of Cloud™.

Vanilla Cola Recipe™

Last night I was at a friend’s house and he had just received a hookah as a gift.  In order to help him break it in, I decided to let the magic loose and created a new hookah recipe on the spot.  Here it is, just for you…

Ingredients:

Vanilla Flavored Hookah Tobacco (you can also add in a little bit of Cola Flavored Hookah Tobacco if you like, but make sure it doesn’t overpower the Vanilla)

2 – 3 Cups Cola

Ice

Vanilla Extract*

Instructions:

Pact the Vanilla Hookah Tobacco into your Hookah head and cover with foil.  Remove all gas from the coke by swirling or mixing it about.  Pour ice into your Hookah base.  Pour the cola into your base and pour water to bring the level to its proper place (about 3/5 – 3/4 of the way up).  Add in Vanilla Extract if you want and BAM! you have it…

This is the Art of Cloud™… and that was a wicked recipe.  Enjoy!

Social Media Virgin

The Art of Cloud, Social Media Style

So I’ve often heard of these tremendous success stories of companies that start from obscurity but pop into the limelight because of the effective way they utilize and maximize social media.  I never really understood the value in all of this and always felt that business development was something that happened around a table with a white-board and trusted staff.  I’ve changed my perspective…

I have come to the conclusion, as I’ve mentioned before, that I want to shout out my passion for this project to the world.  To let everyone know what we’re doing, how we’re doing it, and most importantly, why we’re doing it.  My closest friends understand my passion for the Hookah, Shisha, Nargile, Gelyoun, Hubbly Bubbly, but people one or two circles out cannot really make the logical leap from my profession, law, to the world of Hookahs.

For me, this process is like any other Entrepreneurial venture.  The risks and the rewards offer equal allure to me.

When I log on to my Twitter account and see that we’re now up to 10 followers (as of 12:44 AM on Tuesday, March 23, 2010) it actually gives me goose bumps.  Not because my goal was 10 people, I think that’s obvious, but because, as an Entrepreneur, I have, for the first time, the opportunity to actually watch my business grow.  It’s like those time-lapse movies that show a seed grow into a tree…

This new age of Social Media means that you, the reader, and ostensibly consumer, of my passion have the ability to communicate your own passions, or desires with regards to Sparx to me; in most cases in real time.

There is an elegant beauty to the time we live in.

Our Journey

*Please note, I repeat the various names for Hookahs occasionally so that we’re all on the same page.

Years ago I envisioned a product that I immediately felt would change the world of Hookah, Shisha, Nargile, Gelyoun, and Hubbly Bubbly smoking forever. I felt that the main issue with smoking one of the above was not, in most cases, the tobacco or the Shisha, but rather it was the coal–the type, the way it was arranged, and even how hot it was burning.

So I began to invent. I thought of all the different ways to remedy this situation and in the meantime I honed my skills as a Hookah, Shisha, Nargile, Gelyoun, and Hubbly Bubbly master. I realized that I can effectively smoke a Hookah for as long as I like so long as I control the heat and that the “propaganda” that you need change the head every 30-60 minutes or so is… bullshit.

It was as I came to this conclusion that I began to consider electricity and all the possibilities associated with an Electric Hookah, Electric Shisha, Electric Nargile, Electric Gelyoun, and Electric Hubbly Bubbly. I sketched out multiple designs and researched everything I could find on the web. From materials available to manufacturers, I drilled deep because Sparx is not just another product for me, it’s something that bears my name… and that has to embody everything that I am and aspire to be.

So here we are now. Months into the process. A team of engineers, designers, and one very eager and passionate entrepreneur all working towards a unified goal: the Electric Hookah, Electric Shisha, Electric Nargile, Electric Gelyoun, and Electric Hubbly Bubbly head. We’re not going to stop there though. We’ve got our minds focused on this thing and the Revolution is here! But that’s a story for another time…

As of today, our “Breadboard” prototype is almost complete. We have the proof of concept and we are refining our business plan. We are going to throw our hat into the arena in a way that has never been seen before. We are passionate beyond belief about this project and we are doing it as much for ourselves as we are for you. I like to think we’re throwing the biggest party the world has ever seen and you’re all invited!

This is the first post for Sparx… but that may not mean much to you because you don’t yet know what Sparx is.  So here’s a brief summary of what Sparx is and what it will be.
